Cider with Rosie is a wonderfully vivid memoir of childhood in a remote Cotswold village, a village before electricity or cars, a timeless place on the verge of change. Growing up amongst the fields and woods and characters of the place, Laurie Lee depicts a world that is both immediate and real and belongs to a now-distant past.

This is a charming read of life growing up in a small village around the time of the first world war. I think the nostalgia comes from a portrait of life in rural england which has long since disappeared. The odd note in this book is the way the village deals with moral issues - the brother and sister who have five beautiful children are not condemned - they are just there. And the village manages 'crime' not by the law but by censure or acceptance.
