The Great Gatsby
In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since.

Nineteen Eighty-Four
It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.

The Grapes of Wrath
To the red country and part of the gray country of Oklahoma, the last rains came gently, and they did not cut the scarred earth.

This book had been on my list to read for a very long time and I am so glad I finally decided to read it! The novel is the essence of what Distopia is. Orwell did not disappoint with his thought provoking world of hate, anger and conformity. I truly felt like I was right along side the protagonist as he travels from resistance to ultimately acceptance. Also a perfect read in this unprecedented era where we now compare "doublethink" to "alternative facts."
"A peace that was truly permanent would be the same as a permanent war."

This book was great! A little slow in the beginning but it picks up in such a magnificent way. The ending stirred up a lot of emotion and Steinbeck is such an exquisite writer. I think there was the perfect ratio between setting description and dialogue. It really makes you think on the other side of corporate agriculture- about the small farming family and how they have to cope with hardships and set-backs.
"You go steal that tire an' you're a thief, but he tried to steal your five dollars for a busted tire. They call that sound business."

I thought I would have enjoyed this well appreciated novel more than I did. The vocabulary barrier was difficult for me but I thoroughly liked Fitzgerald writing style. I enjoyed the overall plot of the novel but I wished he went more in depth in character structure. Overall, it was a good read but I don't see it as being one of my favorites. Unfortunately not emotionally provoking enough for me.
"Whenever you feel like criticizing any one... just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had."
