Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun. Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-eight million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue-green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea.

The first, and greatest, combination of Sci-fi/fantasy and sheer side-splitting humour.
I loved it as a child, and I still appreciate the wit and characters, but it seems to me less relevant than it used to be - I always used to wish myself into the past, but, stuck in the present, I am aware of how things have changed since then.
Sentimental and cliché as it sounds, this book (and Tolkien's other works) changed my life, and it is my continuing delight that they continued to be treasured and discovered by each new generation.
