Through the eyes of the almost invisible narrator the central characters of this novel all seem to start out as virtuous people. As the story unfolds this seemingly positive group of people are progressively revealed by the narrator (if we believe him) to be flawed, often fatally. A fascinating, if at times uncomfortable, read.
