With the publication of this book, Capote permanently ripped through the barrier separating crime reportage from serious literature. As he reconstructs the 1959 murder of a Kansas farm family and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the killers, Capote generates suspense and empathy.

Wow. This is the true story of the senseless, gruesome murder of a family in the 1950's.
Very well written and performed.

There is something beautiful in Capote's writing that takes a simple newspaper article about the horrific killing of four members of a family and turns it into a truly mesmerising book. Whilst you can never excuse Perry or Dick for the murders, you somehow learn to understand something more of who these people are and they become a little less inhuman.
