This is an interesting story in which Janie, a beautiful Black woman, tells her story to her good and trusted friend in later years. The reader gets to go along through her life as she finds her own voice and strength while living through three marriages. She was ill-treated and not respected because she was a woman, but her third husband - the love of her life - showed her more freedom and a way of living she had not experienced before. The ending of this story is not what I expected as I was so pulled into the story that I forgot how it had started.

I would never have found this except my kids' high school had this on the required reading list. A rediscovery of Zora Neale Hurston!

As I started this book I wasn't too sure I would like it, the language was a tad difficult to get used to! After a while though it became easy to read and I really enjoyed the story! Well worth a read!

I was forced to read this in English. I hated it. It seems to be a book that one either loves to death or can't stand and I happen to be the later. I would not recommend it to anyone. The language is difficult and there's far better difficult reads out there. Like Catch-22. Catch-22 means something. I don't think this does.

This is one of the greatest books I have ever read, Zora Neale Hurston has an amazing way with words. She spins an amazing web of images and is able to capture the readers interest with her spectacular story telling capabilities. This book is a true treasure and I am so glad I have read and own it, a must read for everyone, especially those who love to read.
