The Great Gatsby
In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since.

Lady Chatterley's Lover
Ours is essentially a tragic age, so we refuse to take it tragically.Náš věk je v podstatě tragický, a tak ho odmítáme tragicky brát.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun. Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-eight million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue-green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea.

The Diary of a Young Girl
On Friday, 12th June, I woke up at six o' clock and no wonder; it was my birthday

The BFG
Sophie couldn't sleep. A brilliant moonbeam was slanting through a gap in the curtains. It was shining right onto her pillow.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much.

The Bell Jar
It was a queer, sultry summer, the summer they electrocuted the Rosenbergs, and I didn't know what I was doing in New York.

The Picture of Dorian Gray
The studio was filled with the rich odor of roses, and when the light summer wind stirred amid the trees of the garden, there came through the open door the heavy scent of lilac, or the more delicate perfume of the pink flowering thorn.La fragancia de las rosas llenaba el estudio y, al soplar entre los árboles del jardín la suave brisa estival, entraba por la puerta abierta el fuerte olor de las lilas o el perfume más sutil del rosado espino en flor.

The Chronicles of Narnia
There is a story about something that happened long ago when your grandfather was a child. (From The Magician's Nephew, first in chronological order)Once there were four children whose names were Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy. (From The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, first in publication order)

Tales of the City
Mary Ann Singleton was twenty-five years old when she saw San Francisco for the first time.

The Power and the Glory
Mr. Tench went out to look for his ether cylinder, into the blazing Mexican sun and the bleaching dust.

The Grapes of Wrath
To the red country and part of the gray country of Oklahoma, the last rains came gently, and they did not cut the scarred earth.

Reading this book on the tube was an experience. I found myself smiling like a goon and laughing out loud. After a outburst of giggles I caught the disapproving glare of a man sitting across from me (how dare I interrupt his commute home?!), who after noticing the title gave me a knowing smile and asked if Arthur had met Slartibartfast yet. Needless to say we got some (more) funny looks. I'd then realised I missed my stop, three stops too late.
It was worth it. This book is worth any lateness or breaking of public social etiquette that may result.
